British Grand Prix at Silverstone will use new track changes

Silverstone race track is to change it’s layout before the British Grand Prix is due to be held there on the 11th July, although Damon Hill is not a fan of the new changes.

2 new straights are to be added to make it more of an “Arena” type circuit with an infield loop that will mean that Bridge and Priory corners will be not raced on and instead  the track will head up towards Becketts after Abbey where there will be an S-bend before a long straight brings the track to join the original back at Brooklands.

The extended track will cost around £5 million and will add half a mile onto the circuit making it 3.666 miles long and mean laps take around 4 seconds longer that the original circuit. The new track is expected to be finished next month.

Last year Silverstone lost the rights to host the British Grand Prix to Donnington Park for the next 17 years, but due to not being able to find the funding in time Donnington Park subsequently lost it and Silverstone was added back to the calendar after investing in making the venue up to scratch.

Oulton Park extend viewing areas

Oulton Park Race Circuit in Cheshire has had a few changes through the winter to open up more of the circuit for viewing.

The new vantage points mean that spectators will be able to watch racing at Oulton Park up at the Island hairpin and see Shell Oils corner and the racing down Hill Top which was previously unavailable.

Oulton Park is owned by MotorSport Vision who have invested lots of money into the facilities at Oulton Park race circuit. This season the opening racing will take place over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend of 3rd-5th April and will get off with a bang as the British GT & British F3 championship starts their campaigns at Oulton Park.

Virgin Racing VR-01 car launched

Virgin Racing have unveiled their VR-01 car on their website yesterday and plan to have it on the Silverstone race track to put it through it’s paces Thursday and Friday (today and tomorrow).

virgin racing vr 01 Virgin Racing VR 01 car launchedThe car was designed by using Computer Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and not the standard method of making scale models of the car to test in a wind tunnel.
This is the first time an F1 car has been designed solely in this digital method with the designer, Nick Wirth, saying that in future this is the way all F1 cars will be designed.

The 2 Virgin Racing drivers who will be no doubt chomping at the bit to put the VR-01 through it’s paces on the Silverstone race circuit and no doubt it will be a very memorable Silverstone driving experience for them both. The 2 drivers are Timo Glock and Lucas di Grassi.

Both drivers have “driven” the car for the last 2 months, but only on a simulator so it is certainly going to be good for them to see if it performs like it should through the simulators.

Silverstone may still get Formula 1 Grand Prix unless Donnington Park secure funds

Donnington Park was meant to be the new home for the Formula 1 British Grand Prix as of next year for the next seventeen years but now it looks like Silverstone may in fact be back in the race to get to retain it if Donnington Park don’t come up with funds!

Donnington Park have been given 14 days to get the £50 million that it said it would raise to host the 2010 British Grand Prix by Bernie Ecclestone.
Ecclestone is the man who basically owns the rights to Formula One and calls the shots as to what happens with it and he may well open negotiations up again with the owners of Silverstone, the British Racing Drivers’ Club, if Donnington Park do not come up with the money.

The BRDC will not go for a one year deal that would act as a stop-gap to allow Donnington Park to get themse;lves sorted for the next year, they will want a longer 17 year deal to keep the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Ecclestone claimed that Silverstone had in the past promised things that did not happen and he will not stand for this to happen again. There was so many years where Silverstone race circuit was not up to scratch to host the Grand Prix and it has taken allot of time, money and effort to bring it to the standard that it is today.

Ex-Formula 1 world Champion Damon Hill is the BRDC’s president and has said:

We want to provide a really great venue for the fans but in order to do that we will need to have the kind of contract which provides enough scope to develop the facilities without too much risk to the company going bust.

We shall have to see in 2 weeks time if Donnington Park can secure the funds or if Silverstone will in fact be back in the game and maybe able to keep their hands on the British Formula one Grand Prix.

Button scores more points finishing fifth to win World Championship than the whole of last season

Jenson Buttons fifth places at São Paulo, Brazil, scored him 4 World Champions points which was enough to clinch him the Formula 1 World Championship, this is 1 more point than he managed to score in the WHOLE of the 2008 season!

jenson button f1 car Button scores more points finishing fifth to win World Championship than the whole of last seasonIn 2008, racing for the BAR Honda team, Button managed to score a grand total of just 3 points and finished in a miserable 18th position. Yesterdays 5th position got the British driver 4 points and has upped his total (with 1 race to go) to 89 points.

It goes a long way to show that the car that is beneath the driver makes such a huge difference to how they perform and it is thanks to Brawn GP having a great car at the start of the season that saw Jenson Button win 6 of the first 7 races and Brawn GP win the first 8 races!
